Waiheke and Great Barrier

Much of the population lives close to the western end of Waiheke Island in a collection of small villages, each with their own distinctive flavour. From Onetangi with its relaxed beach feel; Ostend with its’ world renowned artisans weekly market; to Oneroa the unproclaimed island ‘Capital’ for shopping, theatre, community cinema, art galleries, library, cafes and bars. The diversity of the islands geography and population lend it great charm and an ability to hold a little something for all who visit and are lucky enough to stay. The unique climate and soil conditions produce consistently excellent wines, particularly Cabernet and Merlot blends. The island seems to have a similar effect on the local art scene – Waiheke artists and craftspeople are credited with producing some of the country’s most respected work in recent years.
