Tait House was built in the 1870's by James Tait, a noted builder and contractor and is rare in the central city as a masonry example of Georgian-style architecture.
The two-storey house is of triple-brick construction, with the exterior plastered and scored to give the appearance of stone. Georgian architectural features include the symmetrical facade, hipped roof and rusticated ground floor. In March 2014 Heritage NZ considered that Tait House has sufficient significance to merit inclusion on the register as a Category 2 Historic Place.
From the late nineteenth century and for much of the late twentieth century it is known that the house operated for periods as rental accommodation through to being utilised as a multi-unit dwelling. Around 1977 the house was reconfigured into three, one bedroom flats and in 2008 the ground floor dwelling underwent significant renovation.
