This Inlet Rd orchard has been and still is, an official Zespri Ruby Red trial orchard. Under Zespri guidance, best growing approach for the new variety has been developed, and now the orchard has set fruit for approximately 10,000 trays production per canopy hectare from its most developed blocks.
The variety has met with excellent market success, particularly from Asian countries, which has translated into very high grower returns. This orchard achieved NZ$22.72 income gross income per tray for its 2023 season crop. This is approximately double the tray return of the Zespri gold variety.
Such has been the market success and demand level that Zespri for 2024 will be selling 46ct fruit, previously discarded as too small. Incorporating this size into a saleable category will further increase grower returns.
The orchard comprises 2.0 canopy hectare of Ruby Red. The four orchard blocks have been progressively grafted over three years. The most mature block is now in full production. The youngest block will reach full production in 2028. Total land area is 3.866 hectares. Additional suitable land is available for further planting.
The orchard development standard is high, inclusive of overhead cover to protect crop in mature areas.
